Illusions of Grandeur - Daily Confidence 11
Illusions of Grandeur - Daily Confidence 11 I have this romantic idea of having complete location and time freedom. I would wake up each morning with the sun. Stretch happily. Make a cup of delicious coffee and sip it on a front porch with an amazing view. I would take a quiet walk along the beach. Upon my return, I’d sit at my laptop and write. I’d write for hours. My writer’s desk would be like Diane Keaton’s in Something’s Gotta Give with a view of the beach. I would have this magical writer’s life. When I shared this with my business coach he threw in two great danes and a library. The reality is that I will NEVER have a life like that while I am still being the ME I am today. Sure, I can aim for a home on the beach and do all the things I mentioned above. Except the dogs. I don’t want two great danes. But everything I mentioned is absolutely doable. Here’s the “problem”. I catch myself saying to myself things like “If I had more time freed up. THEN I’d have that magical writer’s life.” The reality is, if I’m not writing NOW, everyday... even for a few minutes, what in the world makes me think that if my life looked like the magical beach house that I would be writing for hours everyday? Seriously. That is an illusion of grandeur. IF my life looked like that, THEN I would do . IF I lived in a neighborhood with lots of wooded paths, THEN I would run more. IF I had a different job, THEN I would work harder. What if we took out the if’s and just became who we wanted to be? If I want to be a full time writer, then I need to BE one now. Whatever that means to me. Ignore the circumstances and BE the person you want to be right now. This is going to make you think... what does a “Happy Energetic Person” do? Think? Act? What does a “Successful Business Owner” do? Think? Act? BE the person you want to be. DO the things you believe that person would do. HAVE the experiences of the person you are becoming. From personal experience, which you can read about in my book... I wanted to run half marathons. Never ran one before. Only ran about 3 miles tops and very inconsistently. So, in order for me to make the leap from an hobby runner to a half marathoner (13.1 miles), I had to change my mindset. I BECAME a runner. I declared “I am a runner!” Then I played the game “What would a runner do?” I decided that a runner would have a training schedule and be registered for a half marathon. So, I got both. A runner would religiously stick to their schedule. So, I did. A runner would take care of their body and eat healthy and stretch. So, I did. BE a runner. DO what runners do. HAVE the experiences of a runner. I completed my first half marathon in 2 hours and 16 minutes. Pretty good. Actually, VERY good. I now consider myself a runner and aim for one or two half marathons a year. I decided that I wanted to write a book. I have never written a book before. My first attempt failed because I treated it like blogging. Very different mindset. After a few months of little progress, I knew I had to shift from I want to write a book to “I am a bestselling author.” And I did it. I wrote and published a bestselling book. Let me give you one more example with a twist... If a person that thinks that they don’t have enough money to do the things they want, then they are BEING a person of lack. Which means that they are DOING the things that a person of lack would do, think and say. They will continue to have experiences of lack. When you focus on the problem, you will continue to live in the problem. When you focus on where you want to be in life, you will begin to live in the solution. Be. Do. Have.
