How To Wear Blue

This month is all about wearing the color blue.

Depth

The dark blues will look great on all the deeps. Yes, from cool to warm blues. The light blues on the chart are best on the lights. Also from cool to warm blues. The medium blues are great for all color types. Just make sure the blue isn't super sharp if you are soft.

Chroma

Notice that the last row of each chart are the same. That is because when enough white is added to a color, the color is softened. The bottom row of each chart are soft blues. The same is true for the top row. These are also all the same. When you add black to a color, the color is softened. The top row of each chart are soft blues. The bright chart includes clear chroma colors up to the purest brightest colors. Cyan is a very bright sharp color. The soft chart includes colors that have been slightly softened.

Temperature

Warm blue is cyan with a touch of yellow added to it. The color immediately becomes a blue-green hue. I've added an "in between" color to the last column that is not in the color fan. The next set of colors in your color fan lean more green. These warm blues will only look great on warm undertones AND cool undertones. Cool blue is cyan with a touch of magenta added to it. The color immediately becomes a blue-purple. Although, these colors exist on the cool side of the color wheel, I find that bright, warm, medium and deep individuals can wear royal blue and blue well. The colors must be sharp.

The lighter cool blues will look good on cool undertones but may washout the warm and medium to deeps. Cyan, as it's truest form, is a bright sharp color and is technically universal to all undertones. Warm individuals, especially, need strong coloring to wear this color well.

Choosing the Right Neutrals With Your Blue

I paired the cool blues with cool neutrals. The cool neutrals are made with some blue giving the combo a cool color palette. White is considered a "cool" neutral as well and will cool down a color when paired with it. 

The warm blues are paired with warm neutrals. These neutrals are made with yellow and are harmonious with the warm blues that also have some yellow in them.
