8 Myths About Finding Your Color Type (And Why They’re Holding You Back!)

Color analysis is more popular than ever, but with all the advice floating around, there’s also a lot of misinformation. Too many people are using outdated or flat-out wrong methods to figure out their most flattering colors—and that’s making the process much harder than it needs to be!

In our latest episode of Midlife Moxie, Jen Vax and Gail Scott are calling out the 8 biggest myths about color analysis that might be keeping you from discovering your best colors. If you’ve ever been told to check your veins, wear gold vs. silver, or “just know” your season, this episode is for you.

Watch the Episode Below!

The 8 Myths That Are Wrecking Your Color Confidence

1. “Look at Your Veins to Find Your Undertone”

This is one of the most common myths, and it’s completely unreliable. Your vein color depends on skin thickness, lighting, and even hydration levels. Just because your veins appear blue doesn’t mean you have cool undertones—and vice versa!

2. “If You Look Better in Gold, You’re Warm. If You Look Better in Silver, You’re Cool.”

Jewelry preference is not an accurate test of your undertone! Many people suit both metals, and factors like outfit color, makeup, and even personal preference can affect how they look on you.

3. “Black Looks Good on Everyone”

We hate to break it to you, but no, it doesn’t. Black can be too harsh on many skin tones, especially those with soft or warm coloring. If black makes you look washed out, there are better deep neutrals for you—like espresso, deep navy, or charcoal.

4. “You Can Only Wear Warm or Cool Colors—Never Both”

Total myth! Your best colors are determined by depth, undertone, and chroma, not just temperature. Many people suit both warm and cool tones in certain shades—it’s all about balance.

5. “You Have to Be Draped in Person for Accurate Results”

Virtual color analysis is just as accurate (if done correctly!). In fact, in-person draping can be misleading if the lighting is off or if the analyst is following rigid seasonal color rules.

6. “You Can Figure Out Your Season Just by Looking at a Color Chart”

Many people try to match themselves to a pre-set palette without understanding the nuances of depth, undertone, and chroma. A true analysis looks at your unique features—not just what looks similar to a model in a photo.

7. “If You Have Gray Hair, You Must Be Cool-Toned”

Gray hair does not automatically mean you have cool undertones! Many people with gray hair still have warm skin undertones and need warmer colors to bring life to their face.

8. “Color Analysis Is Just a Marketing Gimmick”

The biggest myth of all! When done correctly, color analysis is rooted in color theory and scientifically backed. It’s not about putting you into a restrictive “season”—it’s about understanding how colors interact with your unique skin, hair, and eyes.
