What's Old is New Again, Fashion Trends for Fall 2024

This Fall is full of pieces from days gone by. That seems wistful to say, but some of these bring back such sweet times from the past and evoke some of my earliest memories around fashion. These pieces feel timeless, classic, and cool, all at the same time. Let's take a look at some of the classic Fall trends for 2024.

The Pocketbook

It's probably been a while since you have heard that term, but I immediately went to my childhood upon hearing it. I can remember my mother and my favorite aunt having these bags that were a requirement for women to carry with any dress or skirted suit. Feminine and poised, structured and strong, these bags take me back to my first memories of well-dressed women. Carry one with a casual look or a dress, it works either way.

Heritage Fabrics

Tweeds, plaids, and other classic patterns like stripes are huge for this Fall. Think Glen Plaid in a pair of wide-legged wool trousers or a gray herringbone blazer. The look is a little bit prep school and a little bit English countryside, but either way, it's classic. I love these fabrics anytime, and they don't need to be trending for me to wear them. To modernize the look, try pattern mixing, or something unexpected like sequins paired with the traditional fabric.

Brooches

This trend starting taking off last Fall and I feared that it might get lost over the Summer, but I am actually seeing more of them this season than last. This accessory is a great way to add fun to an otherwise serious or professional suit or dress. Or, you can add them to a trucker jacket with a T shirt to shake things up a bit. We middle-aged women may still have some pieces that our grandmothers owned that are just itching to be worn again. Express your inner self by adding these classic pins to your outfits.

Loafers

Being from Generation X, my middle school and early high school years were filled with penny loafers (yes, penny included). This Fall, the loafer is back and they are better than ever. From fun pink colors to masculine styles that mean business, this comfortable option is the perfect companion to the blazers and trousers that are everywhere.

Charms

My middle-aged friends and I have lived long enough to see charm necklaces and bracelets come and go, but I have always loved them. The dangly appearance, the cool sounds they make, the opportunity to wear your collectibles...why are they not always on trend? Well, they are this year! So pull out your old pieces and add some new charms and you'll be right in style.

Something about these pieces makes me feel warm and happy and I hope they do the same for you. Maybe they make me feel that being my age isn't so bad after all. Maybe they make me feel cool again. Whatever it is, I'm loving it.
