Color Analysis Quiz - Step 3: Warm and Medium - Bright or Soft

Color Analysis Quiz Step 3

You selected WARM and MEDIUM. This means you have warm undertones with medium eyes, hair AND/OR skin.

This means that you wear warm medium colors well. However, there is one last step. What is your chroma? Are you Bright or Soft. Do you wear bright colors well or do they feel too strong on you?

If you know what your chroma is, then you know your color type! Select it below. If not, scroll down a bit to learn more about being soft or bright.

Watch this video that explains bright, soft and muted colors and why this is so important in learning the types of colors that flatter you best.

Quick Tip

If you can't decide between bright and soft, choose bright. The Bright Warm Medium color palette is very similar to the Soft Warm Medium color palette. The only real difference is that the Bright Warm Medium color palette has the bright colors.

BRIGHT Explained

Clear chroma colors are colors that start out pure. Like a bright red. White or black may be added to create light and dark versions of the color, but the color started with a clear chroma. Pastel pink to bright red to maroon can all be considered "bright" colors.

SOFT Explained

Muted or greyed colors are colors that have been muted. In art, the color on the opposite side of the color wheel can be added to mute a color. You can also add grey to a color. Adding a touch of green to a bright red will create a muted/greyed red. You can then add white or black to create light to dark versions of this muted red. Muted colors can have a grey/dusty/earthy quality to them.
The brown skinned woman on the right is Soft Warm and Deep. I included her as an example because if her eyes and eyebrows were lighter she could be Soft Warm and Medium.
When you wear a brighter color, do you feel good in it or do you feel like it over powers you? If it overpowers you, you may be SOFT. If you can definitely wear brighter colors, even if not the brightest color, you are likely BRIGHT.
When you wear a soft earthy color, do you feel at home in it or do you feel a little blah. If a muted color feels off, then you may be BRIGHT. If you can wear muted colors well and feel great in them, then you may be SOFT.
One more way to figure this out. If you wore a bright color, would you see the color first or you first? Bright colors will pop off of muted colors. If your natural coloring and tone is soft, then a bright color will jump forward versus being in harmony with you.

  • Hi Jen,

I’ve followed your method for a while I recently changed my hair color to a dark chocolate color and I was wondering if that is going to change my results, I am a soft, warm, medium. My hair color was previously a light chocolate brown. I have golden hazle eyes and a warm undertone.
    Your Color Style replied:
I don’t think so. Your darker hair will allow you to wear darker colors. Wear your SWM and then wear darker colors as you’d likeSent from my iPad

  • Hi Jen!

I’ve been watching your videos (they’re great), and it’s helped me confirm I have warm undertone, but I am struggling a little with knowing if I am bright or soft and I am not a 100% sure if I am medium or deep. I have golden light skin, and I can tan without getting pink, I have freckles, medium brown eyes and blonde hair that looks kinda like a copper blonde in the sunlight. My wardrobe has a variety of colors, I have pinks, blues, yellows, blacks and whites, but the last couple of years I’ve been really into neutrals (beige, camel, cream, etc) since I find them easier to combine. Should I considere myself soft or bright? Thank you so much for your help and sharing your knowledge.
    Your Color Style replied:
    Hi Virginia

I would say you are warm and medium. I can’t really say if you are bright or soft though. I’m guessing you are bright. Try wearing a bright tomato red vs a soft golden mustard.
