The difference between soft warm medium and bright warm medium
The difference between soft warm medium and bright warm medium color palettes is subtle. These color palettes share most of their colors except for the brightest color on the ring. Watch this video to learn the key difference between the two color types.
The Warm Color Palettes Explained
The video below explains the color theory behind the warm color palettes. Understanding how and why a color in a color palette can help you understand where which color palette you is right for you.

SOFT Explained
Soft colors are colors that have been softened in some way. In art, the color on the opposite side of the color wheel can be added to mute a color. You can also add white or black to a color to soften it. Adding a touch of green to a bright red will create a muted or gray-red. Or you can add white or black to create slightly softened versions of red. The soft warm color palettes in Your Color Style are not muted (grayed). They are only slightly softened.
- I am Soft Warm & Medium
One more way to figure this out. If you wore a bright color, would you see the color first or you first? Bright colors will pop off of muted colors. If your natural coloring and tone is soft, then a bright color will jump forward versus being in harmony with you.

I’m struggling with whether I am bright or soft. My hair is a medium autumn with streaks of white (no silver), I have dark brown eyes, and lighter skin that tans to a peachy/honey color with medium brown freckles. I’m warm and medium, I believe. I tend to wear a lot of heathered, muted colors, but I look pretty terrific in jewel tones. I don’t look good in faded or washed-out colors, but then I don’t think I look good in light, bright yellows. I think I’m misunderstanding here. Can you help me?

Your Color Style replied:
If you look terrific in jewel tones then you can wear bright colors. Choose bright. Not every one wears true yellow well. It’s a tough color to wear. Warm and medium individuals usually can’t wear pastels.

Hi Jen,
I’ve followed your method for a while I recently changed my hair color to a dark chocolate color and I was wondering if that is going to change my results, I am a soft, warm, medium. My hair color was previously a light chocolate brown. I have golden hazle eyes and a warm undertone.

I don’t think so. Your darker hair will allow you to wear darker colors. Wear your SWM and then wear darker colors as you’d likeSent from my iPad
Hi Jen!
I’ve been watching your videos (they’re great), and it’s helped me confirm I have warm undertone, but I am struggling a little with knowing if I am bright or soft and I am not a 100% sure if I am medium or deep. I have golden light skin, and I can tan without getting pink, I have freckles, medium brown eyes and blonde hair that looks kinda like a copper blonde in the sunlight. My wardrobe has a variety of colors, I have pinks, blues, yellows, blacks and whites, but the last couple of years I’ve been really into neutrals (beige, camel, cream, etc) since I find them easier to combine. Should I considere myself soft or bright? Thank you so much for your help and sharing your knowledge.

Hi Virginia
I would say you are warm and medium. I can’t really say if you are bright or soft though. I’m guessing you are bright. Try wearing a bright tomato red vs a soft golden mustard.
