Color Theory: Warm Yellow vs. Cool Yellow

Would you believe that everyone can wear yellow?

It may not be a bright true yellow, but yellow is a primary color… and in my experience, everyone can wear a version of a primary color.

That may be hard to believe since yellow is a warm color. Yellow is the color you add to other colors to warm them up.

Medium Color Wheel - Jen ThodenSo, does it make sense to say warm yellow or cool yellow?

If you have cool undertones, can you wear yellow?

All hues of yellow are going to be considered warm colors. All hues of yellow are going to be wearable by someone with warm undertones.

But because yellow is a primary color, I find that ANYONE can wear yellow. Warm undertones or cool undertones, it doesn’t matter.

What DOES matter is the intensity and shade of the color. For example, you can wear yellow but maybe not a muted yellow… you may look better in bright true yellow. The color wheel to the left shows a set of colors with just a slight softening. A little bit of grey added. This is not the brightest of the color wheels. The yellows in this color wheel may be too “Grey” for you.

You may look better in a “cooler” yellow. Cooler yellow… ?

In this color theory lesson, I show you the difference between warm yellow and cool yellow. What does it mean when you hear me say, “that yellow is too cool for you” or “you should wear a golden yellow”?

Once you’ve had a chance to watch, I’d love to know:

  1. What hue of yellow do you love to wear?
  2. Do you have cool undertones or warm undertones?
